College Counseling at YSC Academy

College Counseling at YSC Academy

Whether your student is beginning 8th grade or entering his PG year, the college application and recruitment process is central to our work here at YSCA. I want every student to feel comfortable and confident taking the steering wheel of their own process. Our roles as caring adults are in the passenger seat or the backseat of that car. We may lean forward or provide directions for where we are headed, but the student is ultimately in control. This process is ultimately about fit—academic, social & athletic, and financial—and our students will make the best decision for themselves when they feel empowered and educated about the process.

I work with each student individually so that he has a strong sense of what he wants and does not want from his college and career search. I encourage each student to be adventurous, and to consider schools and opportunities with which he may not be familiar. We will talk about the importance of presenting oneself effectively to coaches and admission officers, and what to look for when visiting campuses. For seniors and PG students, we will complete applications together, and I will provide endless feedback for their essays and personal statements. I also spend a significant amount of my time speaking with college coaches and admission officers, as well as visiting college campuses, in order to help our students identify excellent fits for themselves.

We have several programming opportunities this fall specifically for parents and guardians. This includes a monthly College Coffee, which will alternate between mornings and evenings in order to accommodate all schedules. These hour-long sessions are an opportunity for you to learn about admission trends and hot topics, bring questions and concerns, and learn from each other. I hope to see all grades represented, especially given how much the parents and guardians of older students can share with those of younger students. We will also host our first financial aid program this fall, which will detail the ins and outs of the federal financial aid process, scholarships, loans, and more. For those who are unable to attend, I will always send out pertinent details from our programs and will record our financial aid session—you will feel like you were there! If you ever want to speak or meet individually, please always feel free to reach out. The college and career process is one about which I care deeply, and I am so looking forward to working with you and your families over the next year.
