16 Sep Preparing for College: Testing and Financial Aid
The school year is officially underway! We have had a busy few weeks, especially with our practice ACT and SAT tests. The sophomores and juniors took both practice tests, and the seniors joined them for the practice SAT. Our goal in testing our students was to help them establish a baseline and get a sense of which test might feel more comfortable. For our juniors, they have class with Craig Miller, our ACT/SAT prep person, twice a week. The class is now divided into two groups for smaller and more personal instruction. Craig also meets with a smaller group of seniors twice a week as they work towards the December tests. Rather than direct our students toward one test or the other, Craig is teaching ACT and SAT preparation to all of our juniors and seniors. Our hope is that our students feel as comfortable with these tests as they do on the soccer field—as in soccer soccer, practice is the best way to prepare for these tests, which assess how well a student takes the test much more adequately than they measure of how bright or engaging a student is. If you would like to connect with Craig, please feel free to reach out to him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
YSC Academy was recently approved by the College Board to administer the PSAT, which is a practice SAT test for 9th-11th graders. This will take place during the school day on Wednesday, October 19. The PSAT is not only another effective practice for our students, but it also makes them eligible for the National Merit program, which can include scholarship money and national recognition. Learn more about the PSAT and National Merit programs.
The next few weeks will include individual meetings with juniors and more focused work with our seniors as their application deadlines approach. I would like to invite you to attend our first Financial Aid Night on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00pm at YSC Academy. Ashley Bianchi, Director of Financial Aid at Lafayette College, will walk all of our families through the ins and outs of paying for college, including scholarships, loans, and grants. We look forward to seeing you there!
